Week Nineteen Begins

Yes, you read that right. It’s not a typo. Our 3-4 week kitchen remodel is now entering its 19th week. We do have countertops, and our sink, faucet, garbage disposal, and dishwasher are all installed and functioning, but none of that work was done by our contractor. The only work he did was to level the stove when he was here for a very short time last Wednesday to check out a major problem that he will have to correct. Winter is on it’s way, and our new windows still aren’t caulked.

There is much work still to be done, but he doesn’t seem to have any sense of urgency. He’s very apologetic about taking so long to complete the work, but as bad as he claims to feel about it, he doesn’t feel bad enough to actually, um, you know, show up and do the freaking work.

Although he promised last week that he would come this week and get things finished up, I don’t expect him will show up anytime this week. Monday and Tuesday quickly became Wednesday, maybe, but probably not. Which translates to, I won’t be there at all this week. I’ve hear it all before and I know that his promises are empty and his assurances are meaningless. I have lost all hope.

  1. I hope you haven’t paid him yet. Can’t you hire someone else, so you, like, actually have a usable kitchen around Thanksgiving? Wish I could give you a hug.

    • The final payment isn’t due until the job is completed and done to our satisfaction. I’m hoping the kitchen will be usable by Thanksgiving. The tile backsplash probably won’t be done by then because the tile we chose is special order and will probably take 6 weeks to get in, and we just finalized our selection today, so it hasn’t even been ordered yet. But we certainly hope our contractor doesn’t decide to keep putting us off until the tile is in to do the rest of the work. He could have everything finished except the backsplash in a week or less if he would just come and do the work.

  2. this is absolutely ridiculous. You said you told him about contacting your lawyer – did he react on that? Is it possible to set a DEFINITE deadline for him OR ELSE?

    Hugs to you. This stinks.

    • He has promised that he will be here on Monday and wil work every day until the work is finished, but I am not holding my breath. Contacting a lawyer would be a last resort; but if he doesn’t show up Monday and promised and get the work done within the next two weeks (except for the tile backsplash, because the tile is special order and won’t be in for about 6 weeks), I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
