A Glorious Day

It’s official! Barack Obama is now the 44th president of the United States and the first African-American to hold the highest office in the land. Regardless of how you feel about Obama’s political positions, you must have felt a thrill at seeing him sworn in. What a momentous occasion!

On April 3, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, Martin Luther King, Jr., made a speech in which he said, “…I’ve been to the mountaintop.… And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.”

King was gunned down the next day. He never made it to the promised land. But today, we, as a people, got to the promised land. It’s been a long, difficult journey, but we have arrived at last.

And now begins a new journey.
