A Room With A View

It’s the time of year I love the most, late October, and the leaves are in their full autumnal glory here in beautiful southcentral Pennsylvania. As I sit at my computer and look out the window, this is my view. It’s far more glorious in real life than in a picture. There’s a bush at the corner of my neighbor’s yard that is barely visible in the picture, but it is bright red and I can see it clearly from here. But you get the idea, right?

Last night was trick-or-treat night here. The weather was gorgeous, and we turned on our porch light at 6 pm sharp, a universal signal that trick-or-treaters are welcome.

So why did we get only four trick-or-treaters? Where have all the trick-or-treaters gone? We used to get scores of them, 80 or 90. But as the years have passed, their numbers have diminished down to just a handful.

At one time the dearth of trick-or-treaters may have been due to the neighborhood children growing up, growing too old for trick-or-treat. But the neighborhood has seen an influx of new young families. The sights and sounds of children are everywhere. But not on trick-or-treat night. What’s up? ☹
