A Happy Day

The hockey season is over, so now I am going through hockey withdrawal.

I was feeling a little blue knowing that I am facing several months with no hockey. Oh, let’s face it. I was just flat-out feeling sorry for myself because there’s no more hockey to watch and won’t be until the preseason games in September.

But then a wonderful thing happened that has cheered me up more than I thought possible. The United States Supreme Court killed  the portion of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) that barred the federal government from recognizing legal same-sex marriages. DOMA deprived same-sex married couples of the rights, benefits, and privileges granted to opposite-sex couples, such as Social Security survivor benefits, public employee spousal benefits, and certain tax benefits.

In other words, DOMA made sure that same-sex married couples were second class citizens. No more. We as a nation are one step closer to full equality for all our citizens. It’s just a matter of time before there’s no longer same-sex marriage and opposite-sex marriage. There will just be marriage.
